Start ups - Calling all Business Owners
|
If you are have graduated from the Open
University Business School within the last two years and have started your own
business we would like your help.
The Open University takes part in an annual
survey, the Higher Education Business and Community Interaction Survey (HEBCIS),
of all UK universities, run by the Higher Education Statistics Agency. HEBCIS
collects information on universities' interactions with businesses and the
community. This information is collated annually to provide a picture of how
universities are engaging with a wider audience and monitors the exchange of
knowledge from universities to benefit both business and community members. As
part of this survey we are asked to collect information about any graduates
who have started up their own business. If you have started your own business
we would like to hear from you.
Please contact Alison Ward at: a.ward@open.ac.uk
or call 01908 332893 to receive a short questionnaire about your business.
This will only take a few minutes and will provide us with valuable
information for the HEBCIS survey. This information will be completely
anonymous and the data will only be reported in aggregate form.

Professional
Development Alumni Workshops
25 September half day Networking for Managers,
the next level, OU Campus, Milton Keynes
No matter how far we advance in our career, there's still no denying that
sometimes it's not what you know, it's who you know that helps get results you
want. And so the purpose of this workshop is to explore the concept and the
practice of 'networking' - an alien and uncomfortable notion for some of us,
but which for others seems effortless and often very fruitful in their
business career.
So whether you're a reluctant or a fairly relaxed mixer in networking
situations, you will benefit from this half-day, practical 'the next level'
workshop.
6 November half day The Creative Manager's
Cookbook: Fresh thinking for the upturn, London
Focused creativity is the stuff of all business growth and cost recovery
activity at work. Refresh your skills and knowledge in this area or sample
them for the 1st time as a taster for the Creativity, Innovation and Change
MBA programme. We will examine three areas.
- Innovation: How to create a climate where innovation is 'business as
usual'.
- Creativity: Experience a menu of practical creativity tools, which
transform your thinking and others you work with.
- In the creativity kitchen: Try the menu out on topics of the group's
choosing with like and differently minded network colleagues.

The
Love of Money
|
The Love of Money is a series of three one-hour
factual programmes marking the near anniversary of the collapse of Lehman
Brothers, which precipitated the global recession. The Open University and BBC
Factual have collaborated to produce this definitive behind-the-scenes account
of what happened, why and how generations to come will be affected by its
legacy.
The Bank that Bust the World Thursday 10 September 2009 on BBC TWO at 21.00
(missed the programme? watch it again on the BBC
iPlayer.)
Last September the collapse of Lehman Brothers tipped the world into the
greatest financial crisis for eighty years. Now, one year on, in the first part
of a major three part series on the crash, the BBC offers the definitive account
of what happened. An unrivalled cast of contributors from national leaders,
finance ministers and CEOs describe their tense negotiations in New York and
London as Lehman Brothers headed towards bankruptcy. The likes of Gordon Brown,
Tim Geithner and Alistair Darling reveal the dilemmas they faced and the
decisions they took. The programme explains why the collapse of one bank had
such disastrous consequences for the world's economy heralding the global
recession. Read Alan Shipman's views in the
accompanying
blog. www.open2.net What's your opinion?

The Daily Telegraph, 10th September
Increasing numbers of public sector
employees are recognising the value of an MBA as an aid to career
progression. Journalist Theo Jourdan discovers how this internationally renowned
professional qualification can benefit a range of management staff and their
employers as well. Richard Wheatcroft has been extensively quoted in this
article and Business School graduate Pamela Jary used as a case study http://ww3.precise.co.uk/links/pdfs/82650/50484789.pdf
Open University sees surge in younger
students
With students competing to secure places at traditional universities this week,
The Open University is reporting a 36% increase in course registrations amongst
18- to 21- year olds, compared to this time last year. The limited number of
traditional university places has meant that, for some, the OU is an attractive
higher education option. Alongside this, many younger people can obtain
financial support. Those living with their parents and earning less than
£16,510 a year can qualify to have all of their course fees waived.
